Saturday night, Dec. 20, Lewiston Police and the Lewiston Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at a single-family home located at 146 Grove Street.

Initial reports indicated that witnesses heard what sounded like gunshots or small explosions coming from the residence shortly before flames were observed.

Lewiston Fire Department crews battled the fire for much of the night. Once firefighters were able to safely access the building, they discovered a deceased pet inside the home.

No other injuries were reported.

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Later that night, emergency crews responded to a second residential fire at the corner of Sabattus Street and Jean Street.

This fire is unrelated to the Grove Street incident, and the cause is believed to be electrical at this time.

No injuries were reported.
