The Trenton Volunteer Fire Department says a wood stove likely is the cause a fire that destroyed a home near Acadia National Park, Dec. 22.

20,000 books and a large vinyl record collection were lost due to the blaze.

The homeowner escaped unharmed. However, one firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for a concussion.

From The Trenton Volunteer Fire Department:

At approximately 6:31 p.m. on December 22, 2025, the Trenton Fire Department was dispatched to a multi-story residential structure fire with initial reports indicating visible smoke and fire. Fire crews from Trenton, Ellsworth, Lamoine, and Hancock responded to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions, and suppression efforts were immediately initiated. Shortly after crews began operations, the second floor of the structure collapsed, followed by a partial roof collapse, creating hazardous conditions. The sole occupant of the residence was able to escape the structure and was not injured. During the incident, one firefighter was injured when a section of the second floor failed. The firefighter was taken to a local hospital and treated for a concussion neck and back injuries. Due to the extent of fire involvement and significant structural failure, an excavator was deemed necessary to assist with suppression and overhaul operations. The dwelling reportedly contained approximately 20,000 books and a considerable vinyl record collection, contributing to a substantial fire load. With the structure severely compromised and the fire deeply seated in areas inaccessible to firefighters, the use of heavy equipment was required to safely expose and fully extinguish remaining fire while minimizing the risk to personnel. The fire is believed to have originated when embers from a wood stove ignited a nearby couch. The residence is considered a total loss. The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified and will be following up.
