UPDATE: Do you remember the talk of a new tax for Mainers on all the streaming services we use? Well, the state will begin taking more money from you beginning in the new year.

According to CBS 13, WGME:

A provision in the supplemental budget signed this summer adds digital video and audio services to Maine’s sales tax code. That means streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Amazon Prime, and others will now carry the state’s 5.5% sales tax.

You may soon be paying a tax on your monthly charges for streaming services.

Governor Janet Mills, in her supplemental budget proposal, includes a tax on all streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify.

As an example, WGME says if you pay $20 for Netflix now, you would be charged an additional $1.50.

The Department of Administrative and Financial Services says this is estimated to generate about $10 million a year.
