A sinkhole has opened on Main Street in Bangor. it is near the intersection with Railroad Street and the two southbound/outbound lanes of Main Street, heading in the direction of Hampden.
The two northbound/inbound lanes will be narrowed to one as repair work is conducted. Southbound vehicles will use one of the northbound lanes to travel past the work site. Motorists should expect travel delays in the area.
The work, and lane restrictions, may continue into Wednesday, Jan. 14.
The cause of the sinkhole is not certain but it may be related to an old stone sewer line that crosses Main Street.
Railroad Street will be closed to traffic as the work continues.
