From the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office:

Preliminary investigation indicates that a silver 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, operated by Edward Morris, 52, of Mechanic Falls, was traveling westbound on Plains Road while towing an enclosed snowmobile trailer. A gray 2016 Jeep Cherokee, operated by Dylan Sanphy, 26, of Gorham, was traveling eastbound and attempted to pass another vehicle. During the passing maneuver, the Jeep collided head-on with the Chevrolet pickup truck. The impact occurred in the westbound travel lane. Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage and are considered totaled. Mr. Sanphy was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two adult female passengers in the Jeep sustained serious injuries and were transported to Central Maine Medical Center for treatment. Mr. Morris was evaluated at the scene and did not require transport. A crash reconstructionist from the Sheriff’s Office responded to assist with the investigation. Assisting agencies included the Mechanic Falls Police Department, Oxford Fire-Rescue, and Auburn Fire-Rescue. The vehicle that was being passed by the Jeep is described as a Subaru that did not remain at the scene. Deputy Chris Miller is seeking to speak with the occupant(s) of that vehicle.
