24-year-old Edwin Lawrence of Vassalboro has been arrested after allegedly attempting to transport approximately 2 kilograms of cocaine hydrochloride into Maine.
The cocaine is valued at around $127,000.
The arrest stemmed from an eight-month investigation by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency into suspected drug trafficking at Lawrence’s residence on Webber Pond Road in Vassalboro.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for Lawrence and his vehicle after learning he was traveling to bring drugs into Maine. Troopers located his vehicle on I-295 north of the West Gardiner tolls and attempted a traffic stop. Lawrence fled, leading to a brief pursuit.
According to CBS 13, WGME, police used tire deflation devices to stop the vehicle and apprehended him with help from a state police dog.
A search of Lawrence and the vehicle recovered the cocaine along with just over $1,000 in suspected drug proceeds. No additional contraband was found during a search of his residence.
