RSU 13 school officials say police responded Friday, Feb. 27, to Oceanside High School in Rockland.
A student was accused of making threats and was discovered to have a gun and ammo in his car. They were charged with possession of firearm on school property.
From RSU 13:
Today we had an increased police presence at Oceanside High School due serious and concerning statements made by a student at Oceanside High School involving school safety. Administration quickly responded and was with the student while they waited for the Rockland Police department to arrive. Though it was determined that there was no immediate threat to the school through the investigation, a firearm and ammunition were located in the student’s vehicle. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
We would like to thank our staff and Rockland Police department for their quick response to ensure the safety of our entire school community. Though we do not anticipate a continued threat, we want to let you know that in response, we will be collaborating with Rockland PD on next steps including careful monitoring of campus spaces and consistent supervision throughout the school day. Our staff regularly participate in safety training, and we maintain clear reporting systems so that students and adults can quickly share concerns. We also encourage families to speak with their children about the importance of reporting anything that feels unsafe or reporting anything that they hear or see that is concerning, particularly through social media. Vigilance is key to ensuring that our schools remain a secure space for our students and staff
