UPDATE: Orono Police say they have recovered the body of a missing former University of Maine student, 19-year-old Chance Lauer, last seen on Jan. 19 in Orono.
Police don’t consider Lauer’s death to be suspicious.
From the Orono Police Department:
On March 17, 2026, after receiving information from a citizen, the Orono Police Department responded to a retention pond near an apartment complex. Upon arrival, officers observed an individual in the water deceased. With the assistance of the Maine Warden Service, the subject was recovered from the water. In coordination with the State Medical Examiner, positive identification was made to be missing person Chance Lauer. At this point there is nothing suspicious about the death.

Orono Police are asking for the public’s help to locate 19-year-old Chance Lauer, last seen Monday, Jan. 19.
Lauer was last seen at the Orchard Trail Apartments in Orono where he lives. He is 5’8” tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes.
Lauer reportedly does not have a vehicle, and his phone is turned off.
Anyone with any information regarding Chance Lauer is encouraged to call the Maine State Police dispatch at 207-973-3700.
