The very rare Powassan virus has claimed the life of a Waldo County resident. The Maine CDC says the person was infested fatally from the illness spread by an infected tick bite.
Maine has only identified 14 cases of the Powassan virus since 2010.
Symptoms usually start one week to one month after the tick bite.
