A citizen initiative petition effort has received enough signatures to force a referendum that would ban biological boys from playing in girls’ sports in Maine.

From Protect Girls in Sports in Maine: The citizens initiative has experienced tremendous momentum, with over 82,000 signatures gathered and more than 76,000 validated from 355 towns (far exceeding the required 67,682 signatures). The Secretary of State’s office has determined 71,033 of those signatures valid, officially confirming that the Protect Girls Sports in Maine referendum will be the only citizen-led initiative to appear on the November ballot in Maine.

The “An Act to Designate School Sports Participation and Facilities by Sex” if passed would require Maine schools to designate male and female teams based on student birth certificates.

Currently, the Maine Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
