A morning collision Tuesday, April 7, at the intersection of Route 196 (Lisbon Street) and Summer Street near the Topsham town line, left two people with serious injuries.

The crash also shut down a major commuter route for several hours.

The crash, just before 7am, occurred when a white 2019 Volvo SUV pulled out from Summer Street and attempted a left turn onto Route 196 heading east toward Topsham. The Volvo was struck by a white 2015 Ford F-150 traveling westbound on Route 196 into Lisbon, according to the Lisbon Police Department.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.

The Volvo, which had significant front-end and driver’s side damage, came to rest in the middle of the roadway and was declared a total loss. The Ford F-150 veered off the road. Airbags deployed in at least one vehicle, and emergency crews reported a person trapped inside a vehicle.

Lisbon Fire Department personnel extricated the 53-year-old female driver of the Volvo. She was transported by Lisbon EMS to Central Maine Medical Center with serious injuries. The 30-year-old male operator of the Ford F-150, the sole occupant of that vehicle, was also taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries.

The names of both drivers are being withheld pending notification of their families.

The crash remains under active investigation.
