The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a deadly house fire that broke out Tuesday evening, April 28.
Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 5:02pm, to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment at 31 Waye Street. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, where crews encountered heavy fire conditions upon arrival.
Despite attempts to conduct a rescue, an adult victim was later found deceased inside the home. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and has taken over the investigation into the fire’s origin and cause. The victim’s body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification and further examination.
No other details about the victim or the circumstances of the fire have been released at this time.
Officials have not disclosed whether smoke detectors were present or functioning, nor have they commented on any potential contributing factors. The cause remains undetermined pending the completion of the investigation.
