Dolly Parton named as Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2022 Inductee, along with Eminem, Lionel Richie, and more

Dolly Parton is among the list 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, announced on May 4. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame unveiled the list which includes Parton, Pat Benatar, Duran Duran, Eminem, Lionel Richie, Eurythmics, Carly Simon, Judas Priest, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Allen Grubman, Jimmy Iovine, Sylvia Robinson, Elizabeth Cotten, and Harry Belafonte. The 2022 ceremony will be the first time that six female acts will be inducted in one class.

Parton originally turned down her nomination for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March, saying on social media: “Even though I’m extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.” However, in a recent interview with NPR, Parton clarified that if voted in, she would gracefully accept.

To be eligible, artists must have at least a 25-year span since their first commercial recording came out. Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame John Sykes said in a press release:  “This diverse group of inductees each had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture and helped change the course of rock & roll. Their music moved generations and influenced so many artists that followed.”

The Class of 2022 will be inducted on Nov. 5 at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater. The event will also air on a later date on HBO and stream on HBO Max.  Ticket information for the 37th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be shared in the coming weeks.

Suspect in custody after attack on Dave Chappelle while performing on stage at Hollywood Bowl

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that a 23-year-old man armed with a replica handgun that contained a knife blade was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, after attacking comedian Dave Chappelle onstage Tuesday night as he performed at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl arena.

LAPD identified the suspect as Isaiah Lee of Los Angeles, who was being held on $30,000 bail. Chappelle was not injured in the attack, and later joked with fellow comedian and actor Jamie Foxx onstage that he’d taken revenge on his attacker. Comedian Chris Rock was also at the show, and jokingly asked if the attacker was Will Smith (who made headlines for slapping Rock at the Academy Awards this past March).

Videos from audience members’ cellphones quickly flooding social media and showing a man appear to run onto the stage and tackle the comic.  Additional videos posted to Twitter appeared to show the person who charged Chappelle being detained outside the venue by police and then loaded into an ambulance with visible injuries. Witnesses say that the man was set upon by multiple people onstage immediately after he attacked Chappelle.

Missing Portland Woman’s Body Found in Bangor

Cathy Pride of Portland was reported missing 3 years ago this month. Her remains have now been found in in a wooded area off Odlin Rd. in Bangor.

Bangor Police say a passerby spotted the remains last month.

Her death is not considered to be suspicious.

Waterville Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Mother of His Kids

Nicholas Lovejoy, 31, of Waterville, has plead guilty to killing his longtime girlfriend, Melissa Sousa, 29, in 2019. She was the mother of his two children.

The plea deal caps his sentence at 45 years.

75-Year-Old Man Drowns When Boat Capsizes

A 75-year-old Perry man drowned yesterday, May 3, when the boat he was working in overturned on a small remote pond in Downeast Maine.

Lindon Rockwell of Perry was tending baitfish traps on East Pike Brook Pond when he leaned over to check one of his traps, the 12-foot aluminum boat he was in overturned, throwing him into the water without a lifejacket.

Rockwell’s two friends on shore saw the boat overturn, and immediately called 911. They were over 350 yards away, and without another boat, they were unable to get to Rockwell. They encouraged Rockwell to swim to shore, but with the cold water temperatures and no lifejacket, Rockwell was unable to swim and drowned.

Epping and Deblois fire departments were the first on the scene, followed by members of the Maine Warden Service, Maine Marine Patrol, and the Maine Forest Service. One firefighter wearing a survival suit was able to swim to the overturned boat, and recovered the body at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Rockwell was not wearing a lifejacket, but one was found floating in the water near the boat, and another was stuffed under the bow of the overturned boat.

Game Warden Joe McBrine said:

Inland waters are still extremely cold this time of year, and hypothermia can set in quickly… Wearing a lifejacket can save your life if you find yourself in the water unexpectedly.

Rockwell was transported by Cherryfield Ambulance Company to the McLure Funeral Home in Machias. East Pike Brook Pond is located north of Cherryfield and east of Deblois in Washington County.

Dolly Parton Inducted Into Rock + Roll Hall of Fame

The list of the 2022 artists inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is eclectic, to say the least. Inductees include country legend Dolly Parton, who initially said she would not accept, but later changed her mind.

Former President Donald Trump settles lawsuit with the District of Columbia over accusations of improperly spending non-profit funds

Court documents show that former President Donald Trump settled a lawsuit on Tuesday with the District of Columbia over accusations of improperly spending non-profit funds. Trump agreed to pay $750,000 to settle the lawsuit that was filed against Trump’s Presidential Inaugural Committee, Trump International Hotel Washington D.C., and the Trump Organization.

The District of Columbia attorney general’s lawsuit accused the inaugural committee of spending more than $1 million in non-profit funds at the Trump-owned hotel. It said the committee misused $1.1 million in charitable funds to “dramatically overpay” the hotel for event space, to throw a private party for the former president’s children and to pay a private debt held by the Trump Organization. The suit was filed in 2020.

The inaugural committee raised $107 million for Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, more than doubling the previous record for any other incoming president. The money will be divided equally, with half going to the Mikva Challenge Grant Foundation, and the other half to the DC Action for Children Today DC ACT. Trump said in a statement following the settlement: “Given the impending sale of the Trump International Hotel, Washington D.C., and with absolutely no admission of liability or guilt, we have reached a settlement to end all litigation.”

The Supreme Court confirms draft opinion on abortion is authentic; opens investigation into leaked document

On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed that a draft opinion to overturn the landmark abortion ruling in Roe vs. Wade that was leaked late Monday is authentic, however cautioned that the draft is not necessarily the final word on the matter.

The opinion, drafted in February and reported by Politico on Monday night, has Justice Samuel Alito joined by four Republican-appointed justices in the decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade’s holding of a federal constitutional right to abortion and Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, which largely maintained that right.  Alito writes in the document: “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.” The other four justices to join Alito were Clarence Thomas, who was appointed by former President George H.W. Bush, and Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, all of whom were nominated by former President Donald Trump.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Supreme Court acknowledged that the draft is legitimate, saying in a statement: “Justices circulate draft opinions internally as a routine and essential part of the court’s confidential and deliberative work. Although the document described in yesterday’s reports is authentic, it does not represent a decision by the court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case.” Chief Justice John Roberts said in the statement: “To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operations, it will not succeed. The work of the court will not be affected in any way. This was a singular and egregious breach of trust that is an affront to the court and the community of public servants who work here. I have directed the Marshal of the Court to launch an investigation into the source of the leak.”

Protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court on Monday night, chanting “abortion is healthcare” and carrying signs in opposition of the leaked opinion. Democratic leaders vowed to protect and expand access to the medical procedure in their states.

Politico said that it obtained a copy of the draft opinion from a person familiar with the court’s proceedings in Dobbs vs. Jackson, a challenge to Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. It was not immediately clear whether changes had been made to the draft since it circulated in February; opinions can often undergo multiple drafts and vote changes before a decision is revealed.  The opinion in the case is not expected to be published until late June before the high court’s term ends.

Chris Janson and Eric Church team up in the new video for “You, Me & The River”

Chris Janson has shared the new video for his Eric Church collaboration “You, Me & The River”, directed by Reid Long.  Says Janson of the visual: “It’s a big, big production video and a lot of fun. It’s like a trailer to a three-hour event.”

Church is the sole writer of “You, Me & The River”, and personally sent it to Janson to record.  Janson shared that he received a text from Church about the song – “I just said, ’You know what? I would record this. The song is pretty badass. I was like, ’You wanna do a duet?’ He hit me back. ’I’m in.’ I was like, ’Oh my God, I can’t even believe it.’ I told (my wife), I guess I’m doing an Eric Church duet for the new album.”
