A quick-thinking firefighter from the Bath Fire & Rescue Department went above and beyond the call of duty to save a dog trapped in frigid marsh waters at the Washington Street dog park.

According to the department, members of Shift 4 responded to the scene after a dog managed to slip around the end of the fence at the northeast corner of the park. The adventurous pup wandered into the marsh and became stuck, unable to return to safety on its own.

Without hesitation, Firefighter Hinds waded into chest-deep water—estimated to be around 40 degrees—to reach the distressed dog and safely carried it back to shore. Thanks to his swift and courageous actions, the dog was reunited with its owner unharmed.

The Bath Fire & Rescue Department publicly recognized Firefighter Hinds for his dedication. “Firefighter Hinds didn’t hesitate and waded into chest deep water… and safely brought the dog back to shore,” the department posted. “We want to recognize FF Hinds for going above and beyond to ensure a positive outcome. Great work!!”

Department officials noted that this is not the first time they’ve had to respond to a similar incident at the park. Dogs are naturally drawn to the marshy area, which can quickly turn hazardous. Bath residents are encouraged to continue enjoying the dog park while staying mindful of its natural surroundings.
