Benjamin Steven Tinker, an inmate at the Cumberland County Jail, is accused of calling in a bomb threat to the facility.

Tinker has been in custody at the jail since August 2025.

From the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office:

On February 25, 2026, at approximately 14:15 PM, the Portland Police Department notified the Cumberland County Jail (CCJ) of a bomb threat involving the jail campus. The Portland Press Herald reportedly received the initial call and alerted the police. CCJ Lieutenants immediately implemented security protocols and precautionary measures. Within eight minutes, staff determined that the call originated from an inmate inside the facility. The individual has been identified as Benjamin Steven Tinker, who has been in custody at CCJ since August 2025 for offenses including Arson, Criminal Mischief, and Criminal Threatening with a Deadly Weapon. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating this as a criminal matter.
