Former Neo-Nazi Leader Arrested In Swatting Scheme

Leaders of a Neo-Nazi group have been arrested and charged in a pair of federal investigations with conspiring to harass journalists, churches and a former Cabinet official, among others, with phony bomb threats and other forms of intimidation.

John C. Denton, 26, of Montgomery, Texas, a former leader of the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division, was arrested Wednesday and charged with a series of phony bomb threats made in Virginia and across multiple countries. Denton faced an initial appearance Wednesday afternoon in federal court in Houston.

Prosecutors in Alexandria Virginia say the targets of the bogus bomb threats included an unidentified Cabinet official living in northern Virginia. Court records do not identify the Cabinet official, but public records show that then-Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was a victim of a swatting incident at her home in Alexandria in January 2019, when the alleged swatting conspiracy was active.

Court Rules Trump Administration Can Withhold Funds From Sanctuary States

On Wednesday, a federal appeals court said the Trump administration can withhold funds from New York City and seven states that have declared themselves sanctuaries from federal immigration policies, setting the stage for possible U.S. Supreme Court action. The decision by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said President Trump acted within his authority when he signed an executive order in January 2017 to withhold federal funds from states that resisted helping federal efforts to enforce immigration laws.

The latest decision conflicts with rulings from other appeals courts across the country concerning sanctuary policies, indicating a Supreme Court review is ultimately likely. The appeals court ruled that it “cannot agree that the federal government must be enjoined from imposing the challenged conditions on the federal grants here at issue,” adding “these conditions help the federal government enforce national immigration laws and policies supported by successive Democratic and Republican administrations,” the court ruled. “But more to the authorization point, they ensure that applicants satisfy particular statutory grant requirements imposed by Congress and subject to Attorney General oversight.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged for the second straight day, tumbling more than 800 points after health officials warned the novel coronavirus likely will spread throughout communities in the U.S. The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all had fallen about 3% through early-afternoon trading on Tuesday.
